Bishop Cook Visits on 16 November

Cook-Heather2011The Rt. Rev’d Heather Cook, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Maryland will visit Emmanuel Church on Sunday, 16 November 2014, at all three of our regularly scheduled services.  She will preside and preach for us, offer the laying on of hands for Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation, and spend some time with us in fellowship and conversation.

Confirmation is a public commitment to the worship and ministry of the Episcopal Church — something which many of us believe is our “ordination to lay ministry.” Persons who are 16 years old or older and who have undergone an intentional period 0f preparation may be presented to the Bishop to be confirmed. As in other ordinations, the Bishop will lay hands on the candidate’s head and pray for her or him by name.

Reception into the Episcopal Church is offered for those who had been previously confirmed by a bishop in another denomination, and who now have found a home with us. The Bishop will extend what the New Testament calls “the right hand of fellowship,” a handshake of welcome, followed by the laying on of hands and a prayer for strength.

Reaffirmation is appropriate for individuals who have found a renewed interest in the Church’s ministry or a deepening sense of their own spirituality. With the laying on of hands, the Bishop will offer a prayer for continued grace and providence.

Like Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation require some intentional preparation in consultation with the Rector. Please be assured that anyone who wishes to be presented for one of these Rites of the Church will be accommodated between now and 16 November.

No Denomination does paperwork as well as the Episcopal Church! If you are interested in Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation, please download the form below, fill it out and send it to us by email, USPS or put it in the collection plate at church.
